Built by an artist who got tired of the math.
Breon Johnson is an independent artist and the founder of Signal Room Society. He's self-taught, and believes the music industry's fine print should fit on one page.
Signal Room Society exists because the two available options both felt wrong: pay a subscription for a service that stops caring once the upload finishes, or hand a percentage to a label and give up control of the record. The bet here is that an artist will pay for work that visibly improves a release — mastering, artwork, a rollout plan — and should not have to pay for the act of putting music in stores.
That is why distribution is $0/year and the services are optional and individually priced. Revenue comes from work worth buying, not from an annual renewal an artist forgets to cancel.

What an artist actually gets.
Distribution
Unlimited releases at $0/year with a 85% artist royalty split. ISRC and UPC assignment, metadata QA, and takedown control. A person reviews every release before it ships.
Optional services
A catalog of à-la-carte work across mastering, creative, video, marketing, rights and admin — from $9 for an extra ISRC to $599 for a lyric video, with quoted work such as physical distribution priced per project.
The Booth
Optional membership at $9.99/month or $79/year, giving 20% off eligible fixed-price services and priority turnaround.
How a release moves
- 1. Submit — audio, artwork, metadata, collaborators and splits through a guided wizard with readiness scoring.
- 2. Human review — metadata QA and cover-art review before anything is delivered.
- 3. Delivery— the release goes to stores; status is tracked in the artist's own workspace.
- 4. Client Room — delivered files, order history, royalty reporting and messaging in one place.
Independent, on established delivery infrastructure.
Signal Room Society is an independent company. It operates as a label-tier partner on established store-delivery infrastructure rather than maintaining direct pipelines to every DSP — the same arrangement most independent distributors of this size use. Artist relationships, pricing, service work, review standards and support are handled by Signal Room Society directly.
Artists retain ownership of their masters. Catalogs can be moved out; transfers are coordinated, though DSP processing times are not something any distributor can guarantee.

The questions worth asking.
Including the ones that are not flattering. A distributor that only answers the easy questions is not worth recommending.
Who runs it?
Breon Johnson, an independent artist who built the platform after getting tired of the distribution math. Signal Room Society launched in 2026 and is a small team, which means submissions get read by a person rather than queued behind a ticket system.
How does it make money if distribution is free?
Two ways, both optional. The platform retains 15% of distribution royalties, and artists can buy individual services — mastering, artwork, video, marketing — or a membership. Nobody pays anything to put music in stores.
How new is it, honestly?
New. It launched in 2026, so there is no decade-long track record to point at, and the store list grows rather than being exhaustive. Weigh that against distributors that have been operating since the 2000s.
What does it not do?
It does not guarantee playlist placement — pitching is preparation and submission support, and that is how it is described in the catalog. It does not take ownership of masters. It does not lock artists into annual contracts, and catalogs can be moved out.
